The Church Approved St. Anthony Blessing (Card)
"On awakening she found the precious gift suspended
from her neck and the writing thereon were the
words since known as St Anthony's Blessing."
Note: Catholics are encouraged to carry the St. Anthony Blessing
with them, to overcome temptations/assaults from the devil.
(1) The origin of this blessing is found in the Acta Sanctorum (T. III JUNII. DE ST ANT.)
In the reign of King Denis of Portugal, a woman was greatly tempted by the Devil to throw herself into the River Tagus. One day she was on the point of giving way to the temptation. On her way she passed a Franciscan Church and entering she pronounced a last prayer to St Anthony of Padua. Worn out by fatigue, the desolate creature fell asleep and in a dream St Anthony appeared to her to deter her from her project. At the same time he gave her a piece of parchment, which she was always to carry with her. On awakening she found the precious gift suspended from her neck and the writing thereon were the words since known as St Anthony's Blessing. She soon experienced the efficacy of this blessing, the temptation completely vanished. The King hearing of this wonderful document, wished to see it and ordered that it should be brought to him. His orders were obeyed, but no sooner had the woman been dispossessed of her treasure, than she was again assailed by her enemy. A copy was given to her and again the temptation ceased, and never returned again. The Blessing was used hereafter throughout the world with wonderful results.
